Bark Mulch & Woodchip Mulch: How to Use Them in Your Garden

Why Mulch Your Garden?

Mulching is one of the best ways to keep your garden healthy and looking great all year round. Bark mulch and woodchip mulch are two popular options, each offering unique benefits. Whether you’re aiming for a decorative finish or a cost-effective solution, mulching can help:

  • Retain Moisture: Reducing evaporation and cutting down on watering.
  • Suppress Weeds: Preventing weed seeds from germinating.
  • Improve Soil Health: Enriching soil as it decomposes.
  • Regulate Soil Temperature: Protecting roots from extreme temperature changes.
  • Enhance Aesthetics: Giving your garden beds a tidy, natural finish.

How to Use Bark Mulch & Woodchip Mulch

Step 1: Prepare Your Garden

  • Remove weeds and loosen the soil with a rake.
  • For extra weed suppression, lay down a weed membrane or newspaper before applying mulch.
  • Work out how much bark mulch you need by measuring the area in meters and multiplying it by the depth you need to apply (we recommend a minimum mulch depth of 5cm). Or use our Bark Calculator to work out how many litres or cubic mters you need.
