Compost & Topsoil Volume Explained
Understanding loose fill volume, settlement and how much compost or topsoil to order.
Compost and topsoil are supplied by loose fill volume at the time of packing, the recognised UK industry standard.
Because these are natural materials containing air spaces, their visible volume may change after packing, dispatch and installation.
What Is Loose Fill Volume?
Loose fill volume is the volume a material occupies when it is:
- Freshly packed
- Uncompacted
- Naturally aerated
- Measured under standard yard conditions
Settlement reduces internal air spaces but does not reduce the quantity supplied.
Why Compost & Topsoil Settle
- Movement during dispatch and transport
- Gravity and consolidation
- Moisture changes
- Reduction of air spaces
- Natural decomposition of organic matter
Settlement After Installation
Further settlement occurs after installation in:
- Raised beds
- Garden borders
- Planters and containers
- Vegetable beds
How Much Extra Should You Order?
General landscaping: allow 10–20% extra.
Raised beds & containers: allow 10–25% extra.
- Lower organic matter soils → 10–15% extra
- Compost-rich blends → up to 25% extra
- Deep beds → use higher allowance
